How to Prepare For Your First Road Trip With Your Pet

Going on a road trip with your pet can be fun as long as you're properly prepared. This preparation is basically the same whether you have a cat or a dog, though there are some variances between individuals that may need to be addressed. Here are a few travel tips from Nall Hills Animal Hospital in Overland Park:

Secure Your Pet In the Car

Proper restraint is needed for many levels of safety. A loose dog or cat can crawl into your lap, nuzzle your face and block your view, or get under the pedals at the worst possible moments. Use a crate to secure small pets. Large dogs can be secured through the use of special harnesses.

Acclimate Your Pet to Riding

Some pets love to go on car rides, and these won't need any pre-trip acclimatizing. However, you may find that your dog gets car sick, or that your cat hates to ride. It can help to get these animals used to riding in the car with short trips before the big trip starts.

Make Sure All Vaccines Are Current

You never know what other animals you'll run into on your trip. Have your veterinarian provide the full complement of vaccines for your pet's species, and leave enough time for them to take effect before you head out. Take the vaccination certificates with you, too.

Pack Up

Be sure to take pet food, water, and bowls for both, blankets, towels, medications, toys, and all of the other things your pet needs. Keep some of your pet's water so it's easy for you to get to at a rest stop.

Call Ahead to Motels

The most challenging thing about pet road trips is often finding a pet-friendly motel. Call ahead to those you're considering to make sure they'll accept your pet.

Get a Pet Health Checkup Before You Go

Let us give your dog or cat a wellness checkup before you go. This will help ensure that nothing pops up when you're away from home. To schedule an appointment, just call us at Nall Hills Animal Hospital in Overland Park.
